Best Mouse Ever
This is the upgraded version of the Razer DeathAdder. 3500 DPI instead of 1800 DPI. This is the main difference, although I believe the newer version has a gold plated USB connector and obviously different drivers for each model. Either way both models are identical in physical shape. The arc of the mouse is by far the most comfortable I've ever used, in that it actually follows the curve of one's hand how it instinctively would grab a mouse. It is also a right handed mouse, sorry southpaws, which adds to the comfort and control of the mouse. I can't say I know what the mouse grip is made out of, but it is completely slip resistant and oil resistant/absorbent. The sides of the mouse are a hard plastic and between the teflon feet and light weight of the mouse there is almost no resistance to movement.I upgraded from a Logitech Revolution wireless mouse and wireless mice, while convenient, can't compete with the accuracy and precision that a wired mouse...

After months, I will finally review this thing...
I was very hesitant to review this product. I had a horrible experience with the original death adder.Let me start this review with a bit of history. I bought the original death adder back in 2007. After putting my hand on this mouse at the local brick and mortar, I fell in love. I am a palm mouser, and I wear large/xlarge gloves. So my hands are on the larger size. This mouse is probably the most comfortable mouse I've EVER tried...and trust me, I've tried a TON of mice. The shape steals a lot from the intellimouse from microsoft, but it is somehow a lot more comfortable. So given how much I loved how this mouse felt in my hand, I never thought that razer would fail me in the quality control department. After a couple of weeks, the original Death Adder started squeaking. So much so that it was unbearable. After about 1 month of moderate use, the mouse completely failed me. It stopped working. I took it apart thinking it may be something simple. Nope, it just...

Razer Deathadder
I like this mouse. It's stylish and pretty comfortable. I play a lot of fps and spend a lot of time on the computer in general. I have pretty big hands. I've found this mouse to be true to its claims on comfort and ergonomics. I can use it for long hours with no fatigue. The exception to this is my right ring and pinky finger pressed against the right side of the mouse can get sore after many hours of intense gaming. This may just be an issue with my personal grip style, I don't know. The software is easy to use and there is almost every setting you could ever want to adjust on a mouse available. However, it took me a long time to find the correct settings for my personal system and games (I use 1800 dpi, 500Hz polling rate, 7 sensitivity with a cloth pad). I find the default settings are far too sensitive and I doubt anyone will ever use the highest. You have to lift the mouse ~1 inch off the surface before it loses contact which took me a while to get used to.There are...

A couple of features you might overlook if you don't read the whole manual
This is a great mouse for reasons all stated in other reviews. However, some complaints I've seen about this mouse in other websites come from people who have not read the manual and missed some features this mouse offers that address their complaints. You don't know what to do with the receiver when transporting your laptop?First, the mouse does have a compartment for the receiver. The receiver is tiny already, so most people will just leave it inserted in their laptops during transport. However if you wish to store it with the mouse, you can do so. It does not require you to take out the batteries themselves to store the receiver, but you do have to take the battery cover off to access the compartment. The mouse is too heavy for you?The most awesome and rarely mentioned feature about the mouse is the ability to modify its weight and center of gravity by only using one AA battery instead of two. The reason this is so cool is because it gives you an...

M705 Mouse
I really like this mouse, the Logitech Marathon Mouse M705. It has an assignable button on the bottom of the thumb rest, in a very convenient location (see picture I uploaded). This button has many programmable features. To try it out I assigned a "W" to it. Loaded up Dragons Age and was able to move forward. Running as long as I held the button down. The button is a bit hard to keep constantly down. But maybe it will loosen up as time goes on. Using it as a momentary on/off was easy and should be very handy. The size of the mouse is just right for me. Its a little shorter and a little wider than the mouse it replaces (MX600). Its also bigger than the Anywhere Mouse MX.Logitech claims the M705 has a 3 year battery life. That will be great if that's true. The M705 has an on/off switch on the bottom. So I'm guessing to get the full 3 years I'll need to turn it off overnight or when not using for long periods of time. One of the main...

In response to the "Poor Tracking" Reviews
I bought this mouse for my desktop computer because it fit my hand well when I tried it in the store. I initially had the USB receiver plugged into the BACK of the computer and I had serious tracking issues. The mouse worked so poorly at first that I had to go through the software install using just the keyboard. I was hoping the problem had to do with drivers. It didn't. The problem was simply that the USB receiver was too far away from the mouse (or was blocked by too many obstacles). I moved the receiver to a USB port on the front of my PC and the mouse now works perfectly. And just so I don't scare too many people away with concerns that the mouse has a short range, my computer sits on the floor to the left of me and the mouse sits to my right. There's about four feet between my mouse pad and the back of the computer, with plenty of metal and clutter in between. It's probably safe to assume those other reviewers had the same problem. If you're using this mouse with a...

Product Description

"The image of a pristine isolation has been almost as common in research on foragers as in the popular media. Land filled with Flies is a sustanined argument against such views. Wilmsen marshals an enormous quantity of historical, archival, archeological, ethnographic, and survey data on the Kalahari Zhu to show how far from the reality these images are, how they have their own historical provenance, how they have been analytically distorting, and how they have proven politically pernicious for living groups like the Zhu."—Pauline Peters, Science

"[A] major work. . . . Anthropologists will, and should, use Wilmsen's meticulously detailed study to revise their early lectures in the introductory course, and no future study of African 'foragers' should ignore it."—Parker Shipton, American Anthropologist

"An impressive book. . . . The reader need only read the first few pages to judge both the quality and ambitiousness of the work. . . . Essential reading."—David R. Penna, Africa Today

anthropology majors and curious world citizens
this book is thought provoking in that it challenges us to question notions of reality disseminated to us by experts and media organizations. What guides analytical perceptions about the world and the people in it, is a topic that is attempted-I believe successfully- in Edwin Wilmsen's Book: Land Filled With Flies. History is crucial in the development and presentation of realities of existences and Wilmsen uncovers these factors of construction. The identity, under "construction" is the "Bushmen" of the Kalahari. If you like to dismantle structures of power and strip bare pre-conceived notions of perception, then you will like this book. I got all this just from reading the first and last chapter. Even the intro was sizzling. If you like biting remarks and criticisms, he pleases by exposing his anthropological colleagues as accomplices in the shaping of a destructive categorization of a disadvantaged people, the "fictitious Bushmen"

Gritty Emergency Medicine In NYC
Mr. Burke has taken circumstances of his own life (as an EMT and as a paramedic) and turned them into this novel. It is fascinating but not for the faint-hearted -- it is graphic in a medical sort of way. "Black Flies" is a page-turner and the reader will finish this brief story in one night. Ollie Cross is a rookie inducted into the macho, burn out world of emergency medicine in an urban setting. I have the feeling that this is a memoir dressed up as a novel.

a dark, riveting, and sure-handed second effort
. . .i lifted an advance readers copy of this book when i was in soft skull's chelsea offices, so i could read it on my flight back to seattle. . . i don't usually do "dark" all that much, i'm kind of a wuss that way-- i could scarcely make it through kosinski's 'the painted bird' because the graphic violence upset my sensitive constitution . . . but burke's novel entranced me from the get go-- in fact, i was rifling through the final pages even as we began to unload. i kept thinking: this is what scorsese was trying to achieve with "bringing in the dead"-- a riveting, wrenching, totally affecting moral tale. burke is masterful with tension, a narrative element which i find sadly lacking in far too much literary fiction . . .

Gritty and Grisly
This is a very gritty and grisly book describing the paramedics who work on the ambulances in Harlem in New York City. The job is more than draining - it corrodes the lives of most of these workers. They are faced with rescuing many patients who are at the dead-end of society - drug addicts, homeless people, gang members... Most of the public loathe them. It's a thankless job.The book is narrated from the first-person. The job and the people doing it are vividly described. Like most jobs there are good and bad individuals, but due to the nature of the work the `bad' individuals are empowered and become abusive. The power of this book is that we feel the narrator being swept in by all aspects of what he encounters on the job. Like most jobs in takes you within its confines and you become submerged within it - like a member of a cult. You become accepted by your co-workers and it is only your co-workers who relate to the unique circumstances of the work...

Product Description

Novelist Shannon Burke earned stunning reviews for his debut book, Safelight, and now he returns with the same minimalist intensity in this arresting follow-up. Black Flies is the story of paramedic Ollie Cross and his first year on the job in mid-'90s New York. It is a ground's eye view of life on the streets: the shoot-outs, the bad cops, unhinged medics, the hopeless patients, the dark humor in bizarre circumstances, and one medic's struggle to balance his desire to help against his own growing callousness. It is the story of lives that hang in the balance, and of a single job with a misdiagnosed newborn that sends Cross and his partner into a life-changing struggle between good and evil.

Great book, but what a mess!
This book is a five star book if you get a proper copy. It covers in great detail the creeks and rivers of the Smokies, including the type of fish to expect and effective flies to use with which to catch them. However, when I opened the copy I received, which I purchased new, I found page 70 right inside of the cover. It traveled along normally from that page for a while until it jumped back to page 17. After so many pages, it jumped forward again to somewhere in the 100s. There was no table of contents, to make matters worse. Needless to say, it is very, very difficult to use the book in the manner in which it was designed because of the error in the print-run.This probably is not a problem of the author's doing, and I hate to deduct stars from that person's work, but it is frustrating to read a book that jumps all over the place, especially when the table of contents and the first 16 pages have been entirely omitted in the printing. If this book had...

A manual for societal behavior and expectations
"Lord of the Flies" is singularly the most important novel for required reading, whether assigned in school or self-imposed. It regularly appears as number one on my own list of best books.Let's play "What if." What if a plane carrying a full load of school boys crashes on a deserted island with no adult survivors? What would happen to those boys? What would you expect to happen?William Golding works with this premise: an idyllic setting, innocent schoolboys. One boy, an older boy just short of teenage years, a boy with fair hair, assumes leadership to stir the others into some semblance of organization and survival mode, much like adults would do if adults were present. He also saw a need to defuse the web of fear of the younger ones. Where are we? How long will we need to wait before someone comes for us? All questions with no answers at this time.Ah, yes, Golding tells us, everything goes well for a while. But remember the "scar" made by the...

More than just a book
William Golding wrote this book as a response to "Coral Island," in which a group of boys shipwrecked on an island make Christians out of cannibals, hunt pigs but do not spill blood, and are cheerfully rescued. Obviously, Lord of the Flies is much more than an adventure story about good little boys. It is an exploration into the darker side of man and the true source of the beast, or Devil. Meet Ralph, who represents sanity, common sense, and the conscience of man; Jack, who loves nothing more than hunting, blood, and power, and who Freudians might say embodies the Id; Piggy, who personifies intelligence, logic, and reason; and Simon, who discovers the true nature of the beast and represents a ray of hope for mankind. I love this book because contained in less than 200 pages is an insight into human nature and the failings of society. When you read this, be prepared not only to examine the book and all its symbolism but yourself and your civilization.

Human Nature through the eyes of William Golding
With this his first novel, author William Golding wrote a novel that he could never surpass in greatness. Lord of the Flies is a novel about our human nature. Too often I think, people jump to quick conclusions about the book and Golding's stand on human nature. "His stance is too pessimistic" or "That books really gross." What these people fail to realize is that Golding tried to paint a picture of human nature as he saw it. He wasn't making things up, I don't think he was particularly angry, he wrote Lord of the Flies to expose people to the atrocities that he witnessed in World War II. One of the largest underlying principles in Lord of the Flies is of course, human nature. William Golding gives the reader three interesting characters to analyze: Jack, Piggy, and Ralph. It's quite apparent as you read the novel that Golding must have read a little Sigmund Freud before writing Lord of the Flies. Let's start with Jack. Jack is the definite Id on the island. He wants to survive but...

The classic novel by William Golding
With a new Introduction by Stephen King

"To me Lord of the Flies has always represented what novels are for, what makes them indispensable." -Stephen King

Golding's classic, startling, and perennially bestselling portrait of human nature remains as provocative today as when it was first published. This beautiful new edition features French flaps and rough fronts, making it a must-have for fans of this seminal work.

William Golding's classic tale about a group of English schoolboys who are plane-wrecked on a deserted island is just as chilling and relevant today as when it was first published in 1954. At first, the stranded boys cooperate, attempting to gather food, make shelters, and maintain signal fires. Overseeing their efforts are Ralph, "the boy with fair hair," and Piggy, Ralph's chubby, wisdom-dispensing sidekick whose thick spectacles come in handy for lighting fires. Although Ralph tries to impose order and delegate responsibility, there are many in their number who would rather swim, play, or hunt the island's wild pig population. Soon Ralph's rules are being ignored or challenged outright. His fiercest antagonist is Jack, the redheaded leader of the pig hunters, who manages to lure away many of the boys to join his band of painted savages. The situation deteriorates as the trappings of civilization continue to fall away, until Ralph discovers that instead of being hunters, he and Piggy have become the hunted: "He forgot his words, his hunger and thirst, and became fear; hopeless fear on flying feet." Golding's gripping novel explores the boundary between human reason and animal instinct, all on the brutal playing field of adolescent competition. --Jennifer Hubert Top to learn more
